Architecture activist Phyllis Lambert says the proposed implantation of towers to support cable cars travelling from the Old Port of Montreal to Jean Drapeau Park is “grotesque.” Dinu Bumbaru, policy director at Heritage Montreal, says the cable-car proposal belongs in a theme park, not in the Old Port below historic Jacques Cartier Square. But the promoters say the area cannot thrive as “a museum” and the cable-car project will revitalize it, attract tourists and eventually offer alternative commuting possibilities from the South Shore. Jeff Jorgensen, vice-president of Skylink Aerial Gondolas Inc., insists Montreal has a unique opportunity to have “the first urban aerial gondola system in North America” and with no public funding.
